In some cases, though, the rider may have a passenger, and it is also quite common for motorcycle riders to ride in pairs or as a group. In these cases, it is often necessary for the rider to communicate with the passenger, or with another rider. Screaming over the sound of the motors and the wind is not very feasible, nor is sign language, so to help motorcycle riders communicate, there are motorcycle inter-communicators, or intercoms.

These come in three major categories:

basic acoustic communicators

wired communicators

wireless systems.

The acoustic intercoms are just ear plugs and a mouth piece which let a speaker say something which will travel through a hollow tube to the listener. This method has no amplification and it is, therefore, of limited use at high speeds. Obviously it only works between a rider and a passenger.

The second intercom type is a wired intercom which uses the motorcycle to connect the rider with the passenger. Each one is plugged into a jack in the motorcycle, and the communication between them can then be quite fluid. Again, this only works when the two people communicating are on the same motorcycle. Keep in mind that all of this takes place inside of the respective helmets.

For communication between motorcycles, wireless intercoms work very well.

There are four different technological solutions for wireless intercoms:

FM

FRS

GMRS

Bluetooth.

FM uses a limited, narrow frequency of the modulated frequency used in FM radios, and it works best when there are no hills or buildings. For a 2 mile radius, the Family Radio Service, or FRS, option works fine, but for longer distances, the General Mobile Radio Service is preferred, akin to the walkie-talkies.

Be aware that FRS and GMRS frequencies are public, so someone else on the same frequency can hear your conversation.

The most advance motorcycle intercom method is the use of helmets with wireless Bluetooth technology, just like the hands-free technology of many cell phones. Although Bluetooth intercoms work over only hundreds of feet, this is a private and much clearer facilitator of conversation between two riders, be they on the same motorcycle, or riding near each other. Once the two helmets are coordinated using Bluetooth, nobody else can intercept the communication between them.

Think carefully before deciding which motorcycle intercom system you will install in your helmets. Your options include one or two earpieces, a waterproof system for rainy riding, voice activation, noise reduction, music, and many other available features.

Are you looking for the best place online to purchase your motorcycle intercom?
Find comparisons and customer reviews at http://www.motorcycleintercomreviews.com.

-----------------------------------------------------------

For more on Motorcycle Accessories, see www.bestguidetomotorcycles.com.

Motorcycles - A Great Past Time

By Clare Louise Al-Aufi

Indeed, good weather brings out bikers from far and wide, and in certain areas in can feel as though there are more motorbikes on the road than cars!

Whether you enjoy motorcycling as a leisure activity, use your motorbike for practical purposes only (i.e. for getting from A to B) or have discovered the delights of a sport such as moto-cross or off-road motorcycling, the first and foremost issue in the mind of any serious biker must be safety. It is a sad fact that motorbikes have a higher fatality rate than cars, per unit of distance travelled. There are various reasons for this but the most obvious is that a motorcycle itself provides very little in the way of protection in the event of a traffic accident. Whilst modern cars have various safety measures, including "crumple zones" that take the brunt of the impact in a crash, motorcycles provide no real protection for the rider. However, all road users, whether motorcyclist, car-driver, cyclist or pedestrian, can do their bit towards making the roads a safer place for everyone.

The most obvious route to better motorcycle safety is better road awareness. This includes awareness of other road users, potential hazards, weather conditions, road layout and of course the rules of the road in whatever country you happen to be travelling. Car drivers can be notoriously oblivious of motorcyclists (and indeed cyclists and pedestrians!) so it is often down to motorcyclists to ensure that car-drivers are aware of them. However frustrating this may be, it is essential to try to see the road through the eyes of other users - has the car in front of you realized that you are there, or are you hidden in his or her blind spot? Has that pedestrian at the junction seen you about to emerge from a side road? Is the cyclist with the earphones in front of you at the traffic lights aware of your presence if he or she can't hear you?

The other most practical and simple way to increase your awareness of motorcycling safety is to increase your awareness of your own vehicle. Getting to know your bike, its quirks and complications is the quickest route to better motorcycle safety. A responsible motorcyclist will be therefore be able to diagnose problems with his or her bike quickly and easily, enabling swift rectification of any issues. For example, a biker who knows his or her bike inside out and is accustomed to its various noises will instantly be able to identify a problem if the sound that his or her bike makes changes suddenly. He or she will not have to wait until the motorcycle's annual service to find out that there is a costly and complicated problem that needs sorting as soon as possible.

Clare is the owner of Freelance Content Creation - She loves to motorcycle, and invites you to visithttp://www.motorcycleandbiker.com/ and read more!

-----------------------------------------------

For more on Motorcycle Safety, see www.bestguidetomotorcycles.com.

Motorcycle Bike

By Pinto Alistaa

A motorcycle bike is a great vehicle which can get you around town. They have low insurance costs, they are cheap to operate, and they can get you to places quicker because of their smaller size. The demand for them is increasing worldwide. With the US market for motorcycle is set to see its consecutive growth this year too. Study shows that there is an explosive market for motorcycles, including cruisers, sport bikes, touring and dirt bikes. It is estimated that all segments will get a boost in the coming year, due to skyrocketing gas prices, bringing more cycle devotees into the core user group and further changing the face of the motorcycle consumer.

Most buyers-first timers or regular riders rely on riding impressions of the new model before buying the one that they fancy. Depending on the choice semi or fully automatic transmission motorcycle bikes can be purchased. The major spin off that have been introduced in the new decade are BRP Can-Am Spyder RT, mind you this is a three wheeler and not a two wheeler. It is different from the 2007 two wheeler motorcycle bike model. It is best meant for the sports rider. For the regular road speedsters a few adjustments can be made. Try a test drive, but not during rush hour and other weather conditions. It is the free wheeling drive that measures the real motorcycle bike. Ironically it is the retired men looking at the three wheel categories while the younger ones prefer the two wheelers.

Motorcycle bikes come in high risk category for riders. Other models and variations that are vying for attention of professional riders include dirt bikes, custom mini choppers; pocket bikes and gas powered bikes. There is one attractive model for every rider. Even kids are addicted to their 'mean machines' before they graduate to the leaner and meaner wheels. Mini dirt bikes and cheap dirt bikes for kids are also high on the 'boy-toy' list. Motorcycle bikes are available in different styles and models, and are popular among both adults and children. Each style comes with specific features and some can be customised to suit the rider. And quite a few riders are now choosing environmentally friendly and affordable bikes. If you choose to buy one then get into a training course for safety and to avoid accidents. Make sure it fits securely and has a DOT label, which symbolizes compliance with federal safety standards.
• Take a motorcycle rider-training class.
• Know the limitations of your motorcycle.
• Don't speed.
• Never tailgate other vehicles.
• Use your signals. Learn the hand signals for turning, stopping and slowing down just in case your bike's signals ever malfunction.
• Respect other drivers. Avoid weaving through traffic and driving on the shoulder.
• Be visible. Be visible. Be visible.
• Avoid riding in blind spots and always use your headlights.
• Brake safely. Use both brakes at the same time.

Before You Hit The Road Checklist

• Test your lights, brakes, turn signals and horn.
• Check the oil and fuel levels.
• Check tires for any punctures or slick spots.
• Make sure your mirrors are positioned correctly.
• Make sure your cables are not worn or frayed.
• Lubricate and adjust the chain as recommended by the manufacturer.

What To Wear

• Protective Eyewear. Find a high quality helmet with a face shield, goggles or glasses with plastic/safety lens so you can always see the road clearly.
• Jacket and Pants. Wear safe, durable materials including leather or synthetics that are full length and fit to size. Color is also important. Vibrant colors and reflective materials are more easily seen on the road.
• Gloves. Choose durable, non-slip leather gloves that fit your hands well.
• Shoes. Wear leather boots or durable sneakers that cover your ankles.

Common Motorcycle Accidents

• Other motorists not seeing you. You're smaller than they are, and you're twenty-seven times more likely to die in a collision than they are. So be visible.
• Potholes. You can curse bad roadways all you want, but in the end, it's up to you to avoid obstacles in your way.
• Speeding. Sure, it's fun to rip down the road. But every mile an hour over the speed limit you go increases the odds of an ugly outcome.
• Inexperience. Know the limitations of your bike before you get out there with the big boys. Rush hour is not the time to learn that you don't know what you're doing.
• Over braking. If you lock up your front wheel when braking, you've just sacrificed your ability to steer. Hopefully, that'll be the only thing you sacrifice.
• Running wide on a turn. Obvious, really. The road is the safest place to be. The shoulder is where telephone poles, mailboxes and little white crosses live.

Motorcycle Safety Foundation

You can always get more information on motorcycle riding safety tips, state laws and course information.

Related Links:
Allstate Insurance Garage

David Lipsky
Advocate for Allstate

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

For more on Motorcycle Safety, see www.bestguidetomotorcycles.com.

New Motorcycle Touring Boots For 2010

By Helen M Perkins

It's going to be a cold January but for the brave guys heading out on their bikes there is much fun to be had. The landscapes will be crisp, the air will be fresh and the roads will be waiting. The only piece of kit you really need for some hardcore riding are decent boots and we've rounded up three brand new contenders for you.

Spada Predators - Reliable and waterproof road touring boots
Price: Under 90 pounds

Spada is becoming an increasingly popular brand for motorcycle enthusiasts in the UK and across Europe because its products are durable and particularly good value for money. Spada touring boots have been prominently featured in the media and have performed well in magazine tests.

Their new 2010 Predator boots have a strong leather outer construction; a waterproof and breathable membrane; shin, ankle and calf protection; toe sliders which can be replaced; both zip and Velcro closure for a more secure fit and a rubber moulded gear change pad. There are very few brands who could boast the same quality for under 100 pounds.

Motorcycle News is one of the biggest independent reviewers of biker merchandise in the country. Spada has repeatedly got into their top product lists. For example Spada Thunder and Spada Element boots both made it into MCN's top biking 10 boots for under 100 pounds. That was before their Predator boots hit the market - no doubt they will make their mark later this year.

These are the best boots for: Dedicated motorcyclists who want to spend long hours on the road without wet and cold feet.

These boots are not so good for: Hardcore racers - you guys need to look into sports boots. Look into Sidi Vertigo or Vortice Boots for a good alternative.

Spada Glides - Short road touring boots for extra freedom
Price: Under 50 pounds

Spada have avoided the winter blues with their new 2010 Glide Waterproof Motorcycle Boots. These half length tourers are guaranteed 100% rainproof and come in a sharp short style - giving you more freedom on the road and making leg movement feel less restricted and more natural.

The boots have a double leather and man made upper, giving a rider the quality of a traditional leather boot and the robust construction of synthetic materials. Glides include a waterproof and breathable Hipora membrane and a rubber gear change pad to stop the boots deforming from continuous wear.

All Spada touring boots, including their latest Glides, are fitted with velcro and zip closure for extra security, along with reflective piping on back to make sure that you're seen by drivers, no matter what the weather has in store.

These are the best boots for: Footloose motorcyclists or commuters who want to feel the freedom of the road but don't want to feel confined in their biking gear.

These boots are not so good for: Risk takers - that extra bit of protection from a full length boot will go a long way in a crash. If you like high speeds and sharp turns invest in a full length boot like the Spada Predators of Ghost Stealth Motorcycle Boots.

Spada Ladies Full Length Waterproof Sofia Motorcycle Boots - For serious female bikers
Price: Under 60 pounds

Women riders are increasing in numbers and they deserve their own kit. With that in mind Spada has designed its new 100 per cent waterproof Sofia Motorcycle Boots just for female bikers who have a passion for touring.

The new 2010 Sofia Full Length Waterproof Motorcycle Boots have a strong leather and man made outer construction; a waterproof and breathable membrane; shin, ankle and calf protection; reflective back panels so you are seen on the roads even in gloomy conditions; both zip and velcro closure for a more secure fit and a rubber molded gear change pad. They continue Spada's theme of providing robust footwear for far less than their rivals.

Spada Sofia Boots are sleek but, more importantly, they are comfortable boots for serious touring.

These are the best boots for: Female bikers who are looking for tapered boots that will allow them to enjoy the roads for just as long as their male riding partners - in all weathers.

These boots are not so good for: Men - you may be favoured by Yorkie advertising campaigns, but these boots are not for boys.

This page was brought to you by Helen Perkins at Ghostbikes. When you are out shopping for the right kind of motorcycle jacket, you will need to be aware of some of the more important things that will help to keep you safe on the road. Too many people who own and ride motorcycles do not consider some of the smaller details that can actually end up making a big difference.

You will always want to make sure that the jacket you choose is made from material that is strong and durable, so if you ever have an accident on your motorcycle, your fall will be padded by the jacket itself. Leather is always a good material to consider because of how durable it is. You might also want to look at the company or brand name of the jacket you get, because more popular ones such as Harley Davidson are well-established and trusted by motorcycle riders in general.

Although it might seem a little silly to consider style and fashion compared to safety features, you will want to consider the way your jacket looks as well. There are many different styles that you can choose from in stores, and it is highly recommended that you look through as many as you can to find the one that really speaks to you. You can of course go with a classic American leather jacket or something more unique, depending on your own style and taste.

Getting the right leather jacket will also protect you from the harsh elements of nature, such as rain, wind, and varying temperatures. A properly maintained bike will provide years of enjoyment and retain its resale value in the event you decide to part ways with it. The time required is not significant compared to the maintenance of an automobile, but the tasks do need to be performed regularly in order to keep your ride in the best shape possible.

What follows are a few basic tasks that should be performed on a routine basis in order to properly care for you motorcycle, dirt bike or ATV.

Thoroughly Clean Your Bike

When mud, sand, and dirt are allowed to remain on the vehicle for an extended period of time, damage occurs as a result of corrosion, paint deterioration, and rust. In a relatively short period of time, dirt and sand remaining on the bike can become hardened and will be very difficult to remove. When these elements are not regularly removed from the bike, they promote corrosion as well. By giving the bike a thorough cleaning on a regular basis, it will remain corrosion and rust-free for much longer than if these responsibilities are not performed.

Do not Exceed Manufacturer's Specs

When engineers design a bike or quad, certain parameters are established in order to ensure that the vehicle is operated safely. When a rider operates the bike in excess of these very specific guidelines, they are running the risk of incurring damage to the ATV - and possible personal injury to themselves as well. Operating the bike in excess of manufacturer specifications can range from hauling an excessively large load, to operating the bike at extreme speeds, to using the machine for tasks for which it was not intended. Operating your ATV, motorcycle, or dirt bike will require more frequent repairs, and can very well shorten the life of the bike.

Perform Scheduled Maintenance as Directed by the Manufacturer

Your bike is a machine that must have its maintenance services performed on a timely basis in order to ensure that the vehicle will remain problem free. This includes the lubrication of moving parts such as tie rod ends and ball joints, engine oil and filter replacement, and the periodic replacement of worn or defective parts. It is also important to replace the transmission fluid according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Neglecting the regular maintenance can very well lead to the occurrence of a costly, catastrophic repair. Furthermore, failing to perform routine maintenance can be a safety issue as well.

Properly Prepare for Storage

While it is easier to simply stick the bike into storage and close the garage door at the end of the season, doing so can potentially cause a lot of damage to occur in the engine, fuel system, and chassis, which can shorten the life of the vehicle.

Jim Buchanan is a writer for Powers Honda. Here is a complete guide to all you need to Know About Motorcycle maintenance for the four cycle motorcycle. Even if you applied motorcycle storage tips before putting your bike away for the winter, you'll want to go through this checklist before hitting the road this riding season. At the start of every riding season you want to do is the same stuff that's required on a 500-mile service.

1. Battery: First things first. Is 12-volt battery charged up yet. set a voltage charger on it and then check with a bold smear to see if it holds a charge. A fully-charged 12-volt battery, allowed to & rest" for a few hours with no load being drawn from it will balance out its charge and measure about 12.6 volts between terminals. When a battery reads only 12 volts under the above conditions, it's almost fully depleted. Actually, if a battery's resting voltage is only 12.0 to 12.1 it means only 20 to 25% of its useful energy remains and its probably time for a new battery. It's either a goner or it has been deep cycled, and a battery can only be deep-cycled a limited number of times before it is indeed dead. After charging it is not wholly in charge its probably just a good idea to go out and buy a new battery.

2. Air Filter: Removed and then clean the air filters and the air filter cases. if the filters are replaceable replace the filter element otherwise use a air compressor to blow the debris out of the filter element.

3. Fluids: The first thing you wanted to do is top off your engine oil. If you did not change your engine oil before storing it over the winner now would be a good time to do an oil change. Than perceived to check all other fluids including the hydraulic brake levels for the disc models and fork and suspension oil. All the fluids should be drained with new added including your front end and brake master cylinders. When you check your brake fluid, if it looks old, thick and brown, replace it.

4. New spark plugs: Now is a good time to go hand in changer spark plugs. You are going to need to loosen and remove your Motorcycle Spark Plug with a wrench or socket wrench. Turn in an anti-clockwise direction and remove the plugs. Do a search for how to read to learn more about your spark plugs.

Take a look at the plug wires and clean up the boots real good or replace them if they're starting to look heavily worn.

5. Tires: Keep your tires correctly inflated. Check the tire tread and make sure that there are no major cracks. If you do find a major dry rot crack it&s probably a good idea to replace the tire. A tire that is very under-inflated can lead to a blow out. So, read the side of the tire and inflated properly. The most common motorcycle breakdown is for tire damage. Check both the front and rear tires. you can then use your air pressure Gage to make sure each tire is properly inflated at the recommend pressure. Rubber is a flexible material and does not like to freeze and will cracks when it is frozen. So, if you stored your bike in a cold spot over the winter thoroughly check your tires for cracks and damage before going out for a ride.

Alexander "coal" Minor has written and worked on motorcycles his entire life. The right gear is necessary considering the amount of travel room you have on a bike. A good set of saddle bags should be sufficient to store everything needed.

This adventure started in July from the west coast of central Florida at 4:30 in the morning at a bar called "Peggy's Corral".

Day One: Having stopped at the gas station next to Peggy's we saw the owner "Rip" and told him we would see him on the next Saturday when we returned. Our plan was to be in Mass. in three days for a yearly bike club rally. The itinerary was to travel approximately 500 miles a day, camping in State Parks or campgrounds. The first day was great. We traveled nearly 800 miles found a campsite in South Carolina, pitched our tent, unrolled the sleeping bags and rested our weary bones.

Day two: Rising early, the day started out good but we ran into rain early. Slipping into our rain suits, we ended up wearing them all day. Blinding heavy rain slowed us down considerably. Not getting far we decided to hunker down in Hazelton, PA to and dry our gear.

Day three we made it to our destination by early afternoon and rode into a party going full swing. That night was the reason for the trip and we enjoyed it tremendously. We pitched our tent right there and rose early to continue our adventure.

Day four After we left our friends in mid northern Mass. we headed for Maine. That afternoon we had lobster on the docks in York Beach and continued Northwest. The White Mountains in New Hampshire has fantastic scenery and the views are breathtaking. Needing some rest we decided to take it easy and got a room in Conway New Hampshire. Staying at hotels started breaking into the cash so we were glad to have a credit card.

Day five We rode our bikes to the top of MT Washington (tallest in the NE). We traveled the breathtaking Kancamagus Highway through the White Mountains into Vermont. That night we camped on the Canadian border at Lake Memphamagog in Newport Vermont.

Day Six the decision to cross over to Canada was made. Our destination, was Montreal Harley Davidson so we could acquire tee shirts. With our newly acquired shirts in the saddlebags we headed south back into the States and that night was spent at a campground on Lake George, New York.

Day seven we traveled all day and spent the night in a Hotel in Hazelton PA, again that credit card cam in handy.

Day Eight we traveled the Cherokee Trail in the Blue Ridge Mountains and camped in Lynchburg Va.

Day nine was spent traveling through the Carolinas and spending the night at a campground in Savannah GA. Dinner at the Red Hot Blues Barbecue was the highlight of the evening.

Day ten was our final leg. Our goal was to be at "Peggy's Corral" in Palmetto, FL to support a fellow biker who had been in a life altering accident. We arrived around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday exhausted from our travels with stories to tell. The day ended with the acceptance of the "Iron Butt" award for coming full circle.

If you are considering a long tour the following are suggested items to pack on and in your saddlebags for the adventure of a lifetime.

1. Tent

2. sleeping bags (2)

3. air mattress (2)

4. rain suits (2)

5. leather jackets (2)

6. leather pants (2)

7. motorcycle clothes (shirts,pants,etc) 3 sets each (2)

8. motorcycle boots (2) sneakers (2)

9. personal hygiene kit (2)

10. camera

11. cell phone

12. maps

13. Triple A emergency road service membership

14. tire repair kit

15. small tool kit

16. cash and credit card

Riding motorcycles is a passion fueled by the wind, sun, rain and cold. The term "Biker" brings to mind confidence with style. Generations of men and women have experienced the excitement of straddling raw power with the freedom to roam. For vehicles and autos this is even more so.
Let's face it. No matter how well you know the previous owner, there really is no way of telling how he/she handled their car or motorcycle before it was sold to you. There are really only two things you can do to minimise the risk:

1. Do a through inspection of the vehicle in question
2. Always buy from a reliable source

Sticking to your guns on these principles will pretty much ensure that you don't buy any junk. If you're shopping around for your first (or next) motorcycle, a good place to be looking is at police motorcycle auctions.

People that buy from these auctions can generally expect two types of motorcycles. They are bikes that have been confiscated or seized by the police as part of their crackdown on criminal activity, or motorcycles previously owned the police department.

Police motorcycles auctions are renowned for its quality stock for sale. Usually when a motorcycle is being taken out of service by the police force, it undergoes some work to take of the badges, stickers and sirens. When completed you have almost a brand new motorcycle, ready to take on the road. These motorcycles have also had a significant maintenance schedule whilst in service, so they're generally in a really good condition. Always a good buy!

On the other hand you venture into buying confiscated goods at police motorcycle auctions. It goes without saying that many of these may not have the service track record of police owned bikes, but there are usually some really good gems to be found.

Between all of these you are bound to find what you are looking for. Of course, remember to do a good inspection before you start bidding. The standard things to look for are the state of the seat, handlebars, tyres, lights, gauges and switches. Also check if the forks are not twisted in any way. As with any engine driven vehicle, you should generally 'steer well clear' if you find any suspicious leaks as this could potentially spell trouble.

Get these boxes ticked and attend as many police motorcycle auctions as you can and you will get that perfect new machine you've been hoping for.

Jake Johnson regularly writes on police motorcycle auctions. You really need to look at the purchase of sun glasses as an investment in safety and style.

The purchase of your sunglasses does require some consideration, since quality glasses can be rather expensive. Some of the things you need to think about are price, quality, material, weight and structure.

Regardless of your budget, you need to decide how much you intend to use them, as well as what design will work best with your helmet. If you will be wearing them a lot, then you will need a sturdy material.

Some motorcycle sun glasses are made from plastic which is very light weight, but may not hold up too well. Others can be made from a variety of metals. One of the best metals is titanium. Titanium glasses should last for many years and are fairly light weight.

Also, you need to look at the level of protection your sunglasses will give you. Are the lenses shatterproof? What is the UV rating? A helmet is worn on the head to protect it from injuries. It is like a hat but its design is more of protecting the head from any untoward incidents. Its use can be traced back to Ancient Greek soldiers who wore thick leather or bronze helmets to protect the head from sword blows and arrows. Later, helmets are designed to protect the head from bullets and shell fragments.

Sports (horse racing, football, ice hockey, cricket, and rock climbing) enthusiasts, workers engaged in dangerous works (construction, mining, riot police); drivers of motorcycles and bicycles make use of helmets. Motorcycle helmets are largely popular because majority of the people have motorcycles around the globe. Motorcycle drivers usually would buy discount motorcycle helmets or even cheap motorcycle helmets. The price is not really significant what is important is it serves the purpose. Well, there are those who are after of star wars motorcycle helmets for social identity and fashion.

Traffic enforcers implement the rule that motorcycle drivers should wear helmets. Accidents do not give warning, hence, prevention is better. People want to get a great deal. Discount are a good option for those who have limited budget. However, it is important to note that the purchase is sound enough. Having more than one helmet is already a luxury, a motorcycle driver needs only one helmet for protection. But of course, if there is much money available, you can buy two or three discount helmets. These can be a good gift to a friend.

Try also to window shop first for cheap helmets. You would never know if you'll also find one that is cheap but durable. When you wear the helmet, you will not be wearing the tag price, right? Don't mind what others will say. They are entitled to their own opinion.

Star wars helmets are patterned after the characters of the movie Star Wars. Here are different designs : adult deluxe storm trooper, X-wing helmet, adult deluxe Bobba Fett, adult deluxe Jango Fett, 3D helmet shaped pull string pinata, Hasbro clone trooper voice changer helmet, collectible storm trooper helmet, clone trooper collectible star wars helmet, and many more. These helmets also go with costumes. If you want to be safe and be "in" in terms of fashion, you can choose one of these helmets.

The decision as to what to purchase lies in you. Get to know how much is your budget, by then you can choose discount or cheap motorcycle helmets or Star Wars designed helmets.

Caroline Bailey help a lot of riding enthusiasts to get discount motorcycle helmets best offers and information on where to look for cheap motorcycle helmets. For those of you in other parts of the world who were not kept awake by the continual thunder of thousands of Harleys riding down the road, let me explain. Each year, Harley Davidson Motor Company hosts an anniversary celebration in Milwaukee, which includes various satellite celebrations at dealerships throughout the area.

You may ask, "Marketing? This was a celebration -- a phenomenon." Exactly! Think about it, thousands of people traveled thousands of miles and spent a lot of money to celebrate their past purchase. There were events all weekend long in Milwaukee and at every Harley dealership where people gathered to socialize, admire each other's bikes, buy more Harley merchandise, and (probably) plan their next bike purchase.

This did not happen on its own. It was a carefully orchestrated marketing plan that HD has worked over decades. While there are many facets to this marketing plan, there are two things that really stand out.

First: Mystique. People don't buy a motorcycle when they buy a Harley, they buy an idea. There is a mystique about Harley Davidson that is unique in the automobile marketplace. I don't know of any other vehicle that draws thousands of people from all over the world to celebrate it. Sure, some have fan clubs where enthusiasts will gather; but none have the same volume of fans. Over the last few decades, Harley carefully formed this mystique, saving the company from almost certain bankruptcy.

Second: Culture. Harley has built a distinct culture surrounding their product, which includes non-motorcycle merchandise that accounts for 5% of the company's revenue. Rarely would you see someone riding a Hog that is not dressed the part. HD has carefully chosen their target market, and built their marketing around them. Sure, there are other motorcycles out there, but if you are in Harley's target market there is no other bike to buy. Many who now can't afford a Harley are waiting and aspiring to the point when they can join the club. And that's just the point. Harley has built a community of people that espouse the culture that perpetually builds the mystique.

Of course, there are other products that build on these elements. Sports teams are the classic example from which Harley has taken many pages. A few teams have a unique cult stature, such as the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Cubs. What would happen if you saw these ads: "Two for One Deal at Lambeau Field!" or "Cheap Seats Available at Wrigley Field!"? It would be disastrous for their marketing!

So, how can you build mystique and a supporting culture around your product? What can you do to separate yourself from the competition so you no longer have to ask for the sale -- so your customers are asking to buy from you? How would it be if you never had to explain your price, but that your chosen customers are grateful to pay any price just so they can be in your club? This is my challenge to all of you business owners. What is your genius marketing idea?

Copyright © 2008 Kahuna Enterprises, Inc.

Tim Dollmeyer is a certified ActionCOACH business coach. This organization has made it a rule that all motorcycle helmets must be checked and tasted on grounds of safety before use. The DOT performs a check on all helmets and labels only those which meet its security requirements. If you have a motorcycle and are thinking about buying a helmet, look for the DOT tag on it. If that is missing, think again. You don't want to get into trouble with the law on grounds of using an illegal helmet. Helmets that have not passed the DOT test are simply not safe enough. They won't go very far in protecting you from injury, in case of an emergency or an accident.

How to Identify a DOT Helmet?

We have for a near-exhaustive list of points, you need to check in order to understand which a DOT approved helmet is and which is not. After you have gone through this, you can find DOT helmets very easily:

- First, check for the DOT sticker. You should find it at the back of the helmet, towards the bottom, at about the middle of the helmet.

- In addition to the sticker, there should be a DOT label sewn to the inside of the helmet.

- The label's location is important. It should be in a place from where it cannot be torn off easily.

- The DOT sticker should carry some basic information. This includes the name or logo of the helmet manufacturer, manufacturing date, and size of the helmet, model number or name and a list of components that have gone into the making of the motorcycle helmet.

- If you don't find these details on the sticker, or if one or more of these features are missing, your best bet would be not to buy the helmet.

DOT Benefits

With the DOT ranking, a consumer can test the safety standards of the helmet they are purchasing. You don't have to take the dealer's word for the safety of the helmet. You can judge it for yourself. We have just listed all the criteria for you.

DOT Helmet Testing Procedure:

Let's talk a bit about the process of ranking helmets and how DOT goes about it.

- An impact test is an obvious part of the procedure. A headpiece is inserted inside the helmet.

- Next, the helmet is dropped from a height of about ten feet. A human head can survive if it receives a G-force of 400 units on impact. It cannot take any more than that. A G-force is the gravitational force exerted on objects in free fall. Helmets that can protect the headpiece in this condition are labeled.

- Manufacturers don't need to test their products all over again after it has received a DOT sticker.

- A manufacturer is free to sell any of his helmets that are DOT rated.

A DOT rating ensures that the helmet you are buying is of great quality and durability. The DOT rating will make sure that what you are buying will protect you to a great extent.

<td valign="top" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; Whether you are building a bike for the road or want to create an awesome show winner you should consider getting a number plate made up that fits the style of your machine.

There are a great number of number plate manufacturers in the UK who will make up plates for you but unfortunately because of changes in the law it is now becoming increasingly difficult to find someone who will make a plate which doesn't conform to legal standards. One of the ways around this is to go to one of the companies which offers to send you a kit which allows you to make your own. You get all you need send through the post and all you have to do is apply a transfer with the lettering on it to the blank plate to complete your registration plate.

Of course, the reason its so hard to get a hold of motorcycle number plates which don't comply to the standard is that it is now illegal to supply them in the UK. All plates made by a UK company which contain a registered UK license number must by law comply to the standards set out by the DVLA. The reason for this is obviously to allow for standardisation of plates of all vehicles on the road which will allow for easier reading of your lettering by police officers and speed trap cameras.

If you want to get a cool custom motorcycle number plate made up for your road bike your going to have to go to an underground plate manufacturer. But at the end of the day the hassle my be greater than it is worth, and you could end up with a £30 fine along with a police order to put the original plates back on anyway.

Visit the Motorcycle Number Plates Website for information about getting a custom number plate for your motorcycle.

-------------------------------------------------

For more on Motorcycles, see www.bestguidetomotorcycles.com.

Motorcycle Repo Auction Get the Best Bike Deal of Your Life

By Jay Fran

It is a sad story, but everyday there are hundreds of motorcycle riders who default on their motorcycle loan repayments leaving their bike to be sold at repo motorcycle auctions. A visit to a repo motorcycle auction is likely to present cycle purchasers with the opportunity to procure a real bargain.

All of the bikes at auction will have been repossessed due to the original purchaser failing to keep up with monthly repayments. Their loss is your gain, as the finance houses sell off these bikes at a greatly reduced cost, in an attempt to recoup some of the money they originally loaned the owner.

Repo motorcycle auctions feature all types of bikes, from used powersports cycles to exotic ATV vehicles. All of which are presented for inspection before the auction starts, sometimes several days before hand.

Why are bikes seized and repossessed?

Bikes are seized and repossessed for three reasons. The most common reason for a bike to end up at a repo motorcycle auction is because the original owner, who financed the purchase of the cycle through a bank, has failed to keep up with the repayments. Once this happens, the used motorcycle is then seized by a repossession company, and the bank will put it up for sale at a repo motorcycle auction.

The second, much less common reason for a bike to be repossessed is due to the original purchaser supplying false information to the bank at the time of purchase. In this case, the bike is repossessed much more swiftly, and an attempt will be made to negotiate with the retailer to return the bike at a slight loss of price. If this fails, the bike will then be presented at a repo motorcycle auction.

The third reason is a dealership is going out of business and the dealer takes its entire remaining inventory to a repo motorcycle auction to liquidate it one by one. This offers a great opportunity to the buyers at the auction.

Is it safe to buy a motorcycle that has been seized for repossession?

Overall it is quite safe buying a repossessed bike, as they will usually be fairly new, certainly less than three years old, and the paperwork will be in order, due to the fact the finance house will have checked out everything before putting the cycle up for auction.

Of course, there is still the possibility that the motorcycle will be in a bad state of mechanical repair, and it is advised that potential purchasers seek the assistance of somebody with mechanical know how, before making a decision to bid on a particular motorcycle.

Almost every auction house will have all of the bikes to be auctioned available for viewing and inspection before the auction starts, spend this time checking over the bikes that interest you.

Most large motorcycle auctions allow the buyer to pay using a credit card, this is an excellent way of ensuring your financial transaction is not only secure, but comes with built in protection, as most major credit card companies will pursue any dubious auction house on behalf of the buyer if the trade is deemed to be unfair.

Buying a used motorcycle from a repo auction can be a very good way to procure an exceptional bike at a bargain price. Modern day auctions are well run, entirely regulated and safe to deal with. All financial transactions are closely monitored and audited, meaning the shady dealings and back room deals associated with auctions in the past is now behind.

Buyers should still exercise an amount of common sense when purchasing a bike from a repo motorcycle auction, although they are now protected far better than they were even ten years ago.

To find motorcycle repo auctions near you, check out Repo Motorcycle Auction Finder

-----------------------------------------

For more articles and information on Motorcycle Deals, see www.bestguidetomotorcycles.com.

You Want to Ride a Motorcycle - What Size Bike Should I Get

By T. For some people this interest prompts words like exciting, thrilling, freedom, powerful machines and similar words. Riders generally find, soon after riding their bike that these words might have triggered an interest but they do no justice in describing the experience.

Throw you leg across the bike and settle into the saddle. Touch the starter and feel the throb of the engine fire up in response to slight throttle adjustments. At that moment, you start to notice the first reality of riding your motorcycle. All the words mentioned above roll up onto a small bundle as you begin to experience, to see this exciting adventure.

Before we get to the streets, let us back up for a minute. Often people ask What Size Bike Should I Get, the correct size, style, type of motorcycle they as a new rider should buy. The answer is a varied as the people asking the question. There are some guidelines but your choice should come from a person, a dealer who can look at your physical size, weight, age to help you make the choice. It is a personal decision as much as anything in your life.

If you elect to obtain training from an organization dedicated to training new riders you will often find they provide small motorcycles, light in weight, low seat heights so newbie's are more comfortable. We want something that is not frightening when we start to ride, something we feel we can control. The small size bike helps reach that comfort level.

You will also find one of the first things you do is "paddle walk" the bike. You sit in the seat and move by walking the bike forward, backward just to see how it feels. Seat height is important to allow your feet comfortably to reach the ground.

Next, your training partner will get behind you; push you forward as you move your feet from the ground to the pegs to get a feel of the bike under some type of power. Maybe partner power is not much but it does move you and provides a first feel of movement on a motorcycle that you do not provide. You will do this for a while.

These motorcycle choices provide insight into what many training organizations find workable for most new riders. While motorcycle size and weight might be your first concerns of this choice, the reality is the seat height is more important. If your motorcycle seat does not provide a comfortable reach to the ground, you will find learning more difficult.

Experience riders slid to one side or the other to extend their inseam reach. While that works it is not something a new rider should have to handle. It also can create some problems if you slide to a side, extend your leg onto level ground and it actually is a recessed hole. You will find the bike leaning at an angle beyond your ability to recover. The only choice is to lay it down and using lifting techniques, maybe help from others place it back on its wheels.

For most people finding a motorcycle they like combines appearance, size, weight, and lastly seat height. The sequence of choice should start with seat height to find a bike that feels good when you sit in the saddle. While size and weight do matter, starting with a good foundation for your ride is a key concern.

Weight and size can be a concern on long rides as moving the heavier bikes can be tiring however once you are riding all bikes feel lighter. Few people can hold up a bike regardless of the weight if it gets tilted over 10 degrees from center while standing still. If sliding to the side of the seat is necessary to reach the ground this problem compounds.

Safety in riding requires training. As with all skills activities the best results come from a professional teaching you as a beginner the skills required in the particular area. In motorcycle riding, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation is an organization dedicated to teaching the interested rider how to ride safely and responsibility.

If you have an interest in riding motorcycles, driving cars, flying planes, current news, events and "what in the world is that all about", are all topics for The Black and White of it All!

We will examine many topics at The Black and White of It All website. As we all know, there is no answer to that question. The question is "which is the best dual sport motorcycle for me?" That question is a lot easier to answer. My reply was "What are you going to do with your it?" My experience is with true dual sport motorcycles rather than big adventure motorcycles so I will frame my answer around my experience.

Some people like the look. If you like the look and will never take the bike off road, the Kawasaki KLR 650 is the way to go. It has been around in some form for over 20 years. There is a great aftermarket network and an unlimited number of forums devoted to the KLR. It has traveled around the world and is bullet-proof. It is also the most comfortable of the big dual sport motorcycles. With comfort comes weight and it is not a bike you want to drop on a muddy hill in the middle of nowhere. The newest version has become more comfortable and more of a load when the going gets tough. The KLR is the best dual sport motorcycle if you want to ride long distances in comfort.

The middle of the road dual choice is the Suzuki DR 650. As anyone who has spent time on my web site knows, I own and love a DR 650. This bike has also been around mostly unchanged for over 20 years. It is probably the most compromised of the big 3 dual sport motorcycles. It is not overly comfortable on long rides and it is too heavy for tight trails. It is, however, the best dual sport motorcycle to take long rides in the woods. It is also a competent long distance ride. If you want to do a little bit of everything, this is the bike for you.

Next comes the Honda XL/XR 650. This is another bike with longevity on it's side. It is designed to be a dirt bike that you can ride on the street to get to the woods. I think it is most true to the roots of dual sport motorcycles. My first true street/dirt motorcycle was a Yamaha DT 250 which grew directly from the MX 250. It was a bike that you could take on the street when you needed to get to the woods. The Honda will beat you up getting to the woods, but reward you once you get there. The Honda is the best choice for riding off road.

We now live in a motorcycle world with choices we have never had before. For $5000 you can buy a new bike that will take you anywhere in the world. The biggest decision you have to make is the level of comfort you want in getting there. That is how you find the best dual sport motorcycle.

Bob Abrahamson is a lifelong motorcycle owner. Opening up a whole new experience, you can find amazing places to explore by planning your trips at home, and downloading your routes to your GPS device. New landscapes, destinations, and road trips await; with the security and confidence of never getting lost again.

A GPS system for your motorcycle can also help to make your journeys as comfortable, and stress-free as possible. If you fancy a break, or you're running out of petrol, your GPS can help. More importantly, your GPS unit can guide you back to safety when you get lost, or accidentally take the wrong turning. With voice guided directions, and software brimming with points of interest (POI), such as petrol stations, restaurants, service stations, and hotels; your GPS can guarantee you a journey of uninterrupted enjoyment.

Sound like the perfect toy? Well, with GPS systems becoming mainstream, and new features and models endlessly hitting the shelves, it can be a hard task deciphering which GPS device best suits your needs.

To help you out, it's worth considering the following points before you go ahead and purchase your first GPS for your motorcycle.

What Type of GPS Do You Need For Your Motorcycle?

Are Its Reception Capabilities Suitable For Your Needs?

Does the Battery Life Of Your GPS Suit Your Needs?

How Resistant Is Your GPS To Vibration & Hard Ware?

Do You Want 2-Way-Communication?

How Easy Is Your GPS To Update?

How Easy Is Your GPS To Update?

What Price Is Suitable?

What Type of GPS Do You Need For Your Motorcycle?

There are 3 types of GPS units for motorbikes; portable outdoor units, GPS units designed specifically for your motorcycle/ scooter, and GPS/PDA hybrids.

If you also enjoy outdoor activities such as mountain biking, rambling, or even camping; a portable GPS that can be taken anywhere with you would be ideal. As well as navigating your off-road persuits, versatile Sat Nav's, like the Garmin Quest 2, operate in any vehicle. As well as motorcycling, you can take it in your car, on your boat, or even on a plane with you.

GPS devices designed exclusively for motorcycles can offer you some very impressive features. Especially designed with you, the motorcyclist, in mind, units like the TomTom RIDER have tough, weather-proof casing, touch-screen options for gloves, and anti-glare screens. One of the latest features introduced by TomTom for effective communication, is a system which transmits your spoken instructions via a built-in Bluetooth audio system, using a headset that sits inside your helmet.

The final type of GPS device that may appeal to you is the PDA/GPS hybrid. Although these devices have been designed primarily with portability in mind, most come with the added bonus of having a large screen. So, like the hand-held outdoor GPS units, this type of GPS would be ideal for those of you who enjoy a range of outdoor activities. With an integrated PDA on top of this, GPS/ PDA devices, like the Mio A201 for example, can be handy for work and play. With features like Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, you will be able to catch up on work anytime, anyplace. If you prefer to listen to music on the move, play games, or store digital photos, a GPS device like this one is an ideal choice

Does the Reception Capabilities of Your Motorcycle GPS Meet Your Needs?

When selecting a GPS for your motorcycle, it is worth thinking about how accurate you want your satellite signals to be, in pinpointing your position.

A lot of GPS units available today have an accuracy of approximately 6-8 meters. However, many of the newer GPS models are designed with a WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) capability, resulting in accuracies of 3-4 meters 95% of the time. The Garmin Quest 2 for example, has a flip up external antenna equipped with a 12-channel WAAS GPS receiver; supplying position accuracy of up to 9 feet.

If you enjoy riding in dense woodlands and urban areas, it is worth noting that GPS devices incorporating the new SiRF Star III Chip Set, are units to look out for. This high performance, low power consumption chipset has superior sensitivity in high foliage surroundings. It is also worth noting that GPS units with external powered antennas are great in maintaining a signal in deep woodlands.

Does the Battery Life of Your Motorcycle GPS Suit Your Needs?

With the freedom to ride just about anywhere with a GPS; battery life is an important component to consider. Most GPS units use 2, 4, or 6 'AA' batteries, which can last up to 6 hours. GPS units with integrated rechargeable batteries are the ideal choice if you occasionally lose track of time. With GPS systems like the TomTom RIDER, you can charge your battery at home, while planning your next route, or continuously keep topped up with power, by charging your GPS directly from your bikes battery.

How Resistant Is Your Motorcycle GPS To Vibration & Hard Ware?

With the freedom to ride just about anywhere and not get lost, it is guaranteed your GPS will get a great deal of use (and reverberation). So, it is important to consider how durable your GPS is, in withstanding such conditions.

GPS devices designed exclusively for Motorcycles, like the TomTom RIDER have been designed with this in mind. Not only weather proof, its tough outer case and rugged shock proof mount has been designed to absorb any external friction.

Although most GPS devices come with a mount, it is an absolute must that you use a vibration isolated mount if your GPS will be used regularly on your motorcycle. The RAM mount by NPI, which is fast becoming the industry standard, manufacture anti-vibration ball and socket mounting systems allowing you to mount practically anything, anywhere with vibration protection and durability. This would be an ideal addition to the Garmin Quest 2 GPS if you were purchasing this portable GPS for a lot of use on your motorcycle.

Do You Want Your Motorcycle GPS To Have 2-Way Communication?

Some of the most recent GPS systems to be launched for motorcycles have taken 2-way communication to a whole new level.

If you own a GPRS Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, it is worth knowing that many Sat Nav's, like the TomTom RIDER, have incorporated a Bluetooth receiver, amongst their many features. With the ability to connect your phone via Bluetooth, and receive incoming phone calls through your GPS and Bluetooth headset, you need never have to take your gloves and helmet off to answer your phone again.

You could even use your Bluetooth enabled phones' wireless Internet, and with certain models of GPS, receive real time information on traffic conditions.

Enjoy riding in groups? It is worth knowing there are some recent hand held units that can offer built in radios that will not only allow you to communicate with other members of your group, but will also display everyone's location on your screen.

How Easy Is Your Motorcycle GPS To Update?

With Roads constantly changing, the ability to update your device easily, and at a reasonable cost, are very important factors to consider when selecting your GPS.

It is important to realize that each type of GPS will be updated in a different way, and so you need to choose which process is better for you.

Those which are attached to a PDA, like the Mio A201 for example, are usually updated via a PC, whereas dedicated in-vehicle units tend to be updated via a CD. These have to be purchased from the road map data supplier.

Some specific software vendors have solutions for preparing maps which can be downloaded to your GPS unit. Most notably, TomTom operate the TomTom PLUS service.

The Choice: Budget Considerations

In essence, your choice can be reasonably simple: Buy the most expensive GPS that you can afford, that suits your needs.

It is important, using my pointers above, to decide which features are most important to you. If you want an up-to-the-minute GPS for your motorcycle; with features like real-time, on demand traffic information, hands-free calling, turn by turn voice instructions via bluetooth headsets, alerts for speed camera locations, plus thousands of useful points of interest, GPS sytems like the TomTom RIDER start from approximately £550 inc. VAT.

If, however, you are looking for more of a toy to play with, and a GPS that will simply get you from A to B, then a hand held device could be a better choice. With a range of features, like simple voice guidance, compass mode, MP3 player, and essentially portability, GPS devices like the Mio 268 and the Garmin Quest 2 are ideal for motorcycles, and a range of outdoor activities. The Mio 268, and hand held GPS units with similar features, start from approximately £250 inc. VAT.

To browse a variety of discount GPS Sytems For Your Motorcycle, or Accessories & Software For Your Motorcycle GPS Systems, visit http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk.

--------------------------------------------------------

For more resources and articles on Motorcycles, see www.bestguidetomotorcycles.com.

Motorcycle Season is Here

By Aria Scherer

Does anything else compare to hitting wide-open road on two wheels? Motorcycles aren't only a mode of transport, they can be a way of life!

Make no mistake about it. Real motorcycles roar and rumble. Forget about mopeds or scooters - motorcycles are the real deal.

No one can ignore the pull of the motorcycle. Quick and streamlined or fit for a king, whether young or old, any of us can enjoy the rush of a awesome machine and a pleasant day.

They are perfect for trips to the country and city commutes. A day at the beach starts and ends finer on one. Running errands turns into fun. But most of all, a big part of the fun of having a motorcycle is needing no destination, simply a road to drive on. Cruising along care-free. Such is the draw of a motorcycle.

Motorcycle engines are available in a very broad diversity of sizes and horsepower that anyone can get the ideal match. And the styles change so much from one model to the other, it's simple to find one just right for you. Motorcycles are less expensive too: less expensive to buy, less expensive to insure, and less expensive for fuel.

Riders have their own community. They share an immediate common-ground because of their two-wheeled vehicles that drivers on 4 wheels do not get to be part of. Regardless of what these riders don't share in common, motorcycle riders can get along together just because of their motorcycles.

And there is no shortfall of add-ons to assist you in getting into the life. Clothing, protective gear, equipment, personalizations, and more, let you display how much you delight in riding and your loyalty to your motorcycle.

The warm months are the select time for motorcycles. Whether riding on two wheels or driving 4, never forget to watch out for motorcyclists. And if you are lucky enough to be riding, get every last bit of joy out of the warm months you can.

Written by Aria Scherer. What exactly are adventure motorcycles? I have always thought that the term was a reverse oxymoron because all motorcycles are an adventure to ride. In actuality, true adventure motorcycles are made to eliminate the normal limits that start at the end of paved roads.

All of us who ride motorcycles are non-conformists to some extent. I have always taken it a step further by not limiting myself to the same roads everyone else drives. An adventure motorcycle can take you places other vehicles cannot. If you don't think you would enjoy a ride through the woods, take a ride up Winding Stairs Road off of Rt. 19/74 outside of Robbinsville. NC. In fact, try the entire days ride. It is less than 200 miles total, but I believe it will be a motorcycling day that you will always remember.

Adventure motorcycles come in all shapes and sizes but do have common characteristics. Good ground clearance and suspension are a must. Some sort of engine protection is necessary whether it is a skid plate or something more elaborate. While not a necessity, I believe that all manufacturers are under the impression that an uncomfortable stock seat is mandatory. Either that or they get a piece of the action from after market seat makers. Your directionals, mirrors, foot-pegs and shift should all have some give to them. It is a lot less expensive when you make that unexpected landing. While making that unexpected landing, save yourself first. In my youth, I always tried saving the motorcycle first and I have the scars to show for it.

Why do we ride adventure motorcycles? We can get to places most people can't. We can challenge ourselves by riding in difficult conditions. We can become better and safer drivers by learning how to ride in a less than ideal environment that is constantly changing. It is so much more fun getting lost because you can't embarrass yourself asking for directions. I don't think there are any negatives to adventure motorcycles. If you disagree, please let me know.

Bob Abrahamson is a lifelong motorcycle owner. Starting with an Allstate 59 he has progressed through 32 motorcycles including 3 currently. It has been said that there are almost as many options for different types of motorcycle garments as there are for clothing in general. With so many different options, it can be confusing and almost mind-boggling to try to figure out what you'll need and what will be most appropriate for your particular bike and riding experience.

The good news is that with the advent of the internet, shopping for motorcycle gear and accessories has never been easier or more convenient. By using the Web, you can shop around and compare prices, shipping costs and times, etc. Before you start shopping, read on to have an idea of some of the basics and what to look for.

Jacket

Your needs in terms of a motorcycle jacket will vary a bit depending on certain factors. The main factors will be the geographical area of where you live and/or ride, and whether you need maximum comfort for longer rides or just something easy for quick commutes. Consider your lifestyle and how your new motorcycle will fit into it.

A leather motorcycle jacket is classic and also very good for protection. However, jackets made from animal hide can be expensive and get very hot, especially during longer rides. Another suitable material for riding jackets is Cordura, which is reinforced fabric. If you choose this option, you'll want to make sure the impact areas (shoulders, back, elbows) are padded.

You will want to choose a motorcycle jacket that can be versatile enough to use through a wide range of weather conditions. Look for a jacket that contains a zip-out liner (available as a vest liner or full liner) and also vents that can provide good air movement during hot days.

Helmet

The helmet is by far the single most crucial piece of motorcycle gear and it's importance should not be overlooked. The job of the motorcycle helmet is to save your life should something go wrong. There are different types of motorcycle helmets with different levels of padding, shapes, styles, etc. Below is a list of some of the more popular ones.

Beanie (Pudding Bowl)

This type of helmet is easy to put on and take off, but provides only the minimum amount of protection for the head (mostly the top of the head). The Beanie (or Pudding Bowl) helmet is designed not to obstruct any part of your peripheral vision or your hearing, but long rides can be loud if you only wear a Beanie helmet.

Half Helmet

This type of helmet protects the top and sides of the head, and in many cases also the ears. The Half Helmet protects more protection than the Pudding Bowl and is still very easy to put on and take off.

Helmet (Open-Faced Helmet)

This type of helmet protects the head, neck, ears and eyes. Though putting on and taking off the Helmet is not as easy as with other helmet types, many things (taking a drink, eating a bite, shooting a photo) can be done by simply lifting up the face shield.

Full-face Helmet

The Full-face Helmet provides the most comprehensive protection for the head, neck, eyes, ears and face. This type of helmet also protects you from elements such as wind, rain, dust, leaves, particles and insects. Putting on and taking off this type of helmet is a bit more cumbersome, especially if you wear glasses. Also, sounds may be muffled while you have it on. The Full-face helmet is usually more expensive than other types of helmets, but well worth it.

Flip-up Helmet

The Flip-up Helmet provides much of the protection that the Full-face Helmet provides, while making it easier to put on and take off without having to slide the entire helmet on over your head.

Motorcycle Gloves

Motorcycle gloves are another important safety garment that you should invest in before you even take that first ride. Because most of us tend to reach forward with our palms down when we fall, not using good gloves can increase your chances of loosing some skin and blood should you take a fall.

There are many different styles, materials, levels of protection and temperature ranges available in motorcycle gloves. The vast majority of gloves designed for use with motorcycles are made from leather or other textiles. Look for motorcycle gloves that will be comfortable and provide the level of comfort and protection you'll need for your rides. Good riding gloves should be snug and not bulky, and allow you to extend and contract your fingers freely.

Boots

Motorcycle boots are interesting in that most motorcycle riders agree that it is safer to ride while wearing boots, but there is no real standard for boots in terms of street riding. One thing that can be agreed upon is that you should never ride a motorcycle wearing flip-flops, sandals, running shoes (or any shoes made of rubber) as none of these will protect your whole foot in the case of an accident.

Motorcycle boots for racing and dirt-biking can be very expensive and exceed the scope of your needs. A good pair of boots for riding will be tough and durable, made of leather or another suitable material, completely cover the ball of your ankle, and have good traction.

Shopping for Motorcycle Gear

There are many ways to find good deals on motorcycle gear. Start by making a list of what you need or want. Visit online motorcycle shops or visit your local dealer to look at different options. Then, look online to compare prices from different outlets. You can also shop for high-quality used motorcycle gear by looking through online classifieds. Many times, people take up a hobby such as motorcycles only to find after a short time that it's not really for them. In these cases, people may try to recoup the money they invested in the hobby by selling off items such as motorcycle helmets, jackets and gloves to private buyers. Always check to make sure your safety gear is in excellent condition when looking through classifieds.

About the Author

For great deals on used or near-new motorcycle gear, visit CycleLeeg Motorcycle Classifieds.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

For more articles and information on Motorcycles, see www.bestguidetomotorcycles.com.

Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts or OEM parts?

Contrary to what many believe, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) motorcycle parts are not inherently better than aftermarket motorcycle parts. Like any product in a dynamic marketplace, aftermarket motorcycle parts manufacturers often find a way to improve upon the performance or the look of the part. A comparison of the two types of parts is often contrary to what many people assume.

OEM Motorcycle Parts:
An OEM part is part made by the same company that made the part for the original vehicle. Oftentimes, auto and motorcycle manufacturers don't make the parts themselves, but contract the job to a manufacturing company. A comparison of the two different types of parts shows the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
The manufactures of aftermarket motorcycle parts must apply for the rights to reproduce a part. Aftermarket motorcycle parts manufactures operate under strict guidelines and by nature of their profession must be absolutely precise in their design.

Good aftermarket motorcycle parts often can't be distinguished from the original. Additionally, manufacturers of aftermarket motorcycle parts have the flexibility to improve upon the design and the quality. Normally, aftermarket motorcycle parts are sold for much less than OEM parts. The possible downside to using aftermarket parts is, that if installed by a non-certified technician, could impact the warranty.

Finding Quality Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
Different company's aftermarket motorcycle parts will differ in look and quality. Your best bet is to find a highly reputable aftermarket motorcycle parts dealer who is in the know about all of the latest parts and manufacturers and who only offers the best quality after market motorcycle parts.

Who Uses Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
Those who build custom motorcycles use aftermarket parts to build bikes with fresh new designs and unique looks. Those with older model bikes often choose aftermarket motorcycle parts because parts for older models have often greatly improved since the original part was manufactured.

Insurance companies almost consistently choose identical aftermarket motorcycle parts to replace damaged bikes after an accident. When the price is cheaper and the quality is as good, if not better than the original, it makes sense to use aftermarket motorcycle parts.

Custom Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
Aftermarket motorcycle parts are essential for customized bikes. Aftermarket parts like wheels, tires, handlebars, frames, foot pegs, mirrors, etc. offer a great number of options in terms of customization. The wide variety of aftermarket motorcycle parts available today makes it easy to create an original looking bike.

There are lots of after market motorcycle parts to make fixing or customizing your bike inexpensive and simple. Before forking out too much cash on a comparable part, take stock of your aftermarket options.

About the Author:
Author is a writer for Jireh Cycles which specializes in aftermarket motorcycle parts. There are many questions that anyone seriously considering building their own motorcycle from a motorcycle kit always seem to ask and I wanted to share some of those with you. That way it should make the decision much quicker and take that long list of excuses (sorry, I mean reasons!) why you haven't built your dream motorcycle yet.

What types of Motorcycle Kits are there?

The sky really is the limit when it comes to the choices available in terms of Motorcycle Kits - you name it and you can probably find it. You would be well placed to think about the overall look you want at the end of the build. It's a good thing to focus on the shape and design of the chassis as that will drive the end result in terms of style, so find one that fits your style and personality. Just like buying a house, do not let colors sway your decision, all that is part of your customization process so consider your chassis as the foundation, get that right and everything else will follow.

How easy is it to start building the Motorcycle from your Dreams?

If you come to this with little mechanical experience then it is best to consider this job one piece at a time or you could easily get overwhelmed by the size of the task ahead. Open the box and take action, the biggest mistake people make is not getting started. Once you open the box, read the instructions once, twice and maybe even a third time. Once you have done that then start ... if you don't start how can you possibly expect to build the motorcycle you have been dreaming about all this time. It might be worth asking a friend or family member to help you out with some aspects of the build process. To be honest though, what you need is the motivation, the space, the time and a vision - after that everything else will work itself out. Oh and lot's of patience, common sense and old fashioned elbow grease.

How long will it take me to build a Motorcycle using a Motorcycle Kit?

This depends very much on your level of experience and the time you have available. With the right skills and experience you could build a motorcycle in a couple of weeks. However, if you are holding down a full time job and this is a part time project for you then you can expect it to take much longer. This could occupy your "so called" spare time for around 8-10 weeks under those circumstance. Remember all good things come to those who wait.

What tools will I need to "get the job done"?

Most of the instruction manuals suggest a basic tool kit is all that is needed. It's probably best to discuss exactly what you may need with your supplier though. There is one basic tool you will need and that is the space to carry out the build. It sounds obvious I know, but if your garage is full to the brim with "stuff" that had no place in your house or you have a car in your garage, then you will not have the room needed. You have to be able to access the bike from all sides during the build process, so do yourself a favor and clear out the garage (like you've been meaning to for 6 months now) or borrow space from someone. Don't make the job more difficult than you need to. Regarding specific equipment that you may not have then the only suggestion here would be to consider a special lift. In terms of the cost of a special lift versus the investment in the motorcycle of your dreams then it is arguably a small price to pay.

What about repairs & maintenance?

Given that you will have built this bike from scratch then any repairs and maintenance should be easy, remember you have the experience now, you know what it took to build your bike so repairs, replacement of parts and routine maintenance should be a piece of cake! How cool will it be knowing that you will not have to take your motorcycle to an expensive repair shop.

Do I have what it takes to create my dream from a Motorcycle Kit?

Only you will truly know the answer to this question and you will need to look deep inside yourself and ask whether you have the dedication, time and skills to deliver your dream. The time will be whatever you have available to you, what is less easy is whether you have the dedication. Some would say that it takes more dedication to take on a project like this part time as the overall duration is much longer. However, to build a bike in a very short period of time takes a different sort of dedication - the no excuses, no limit approach - just do whatever it takes to build the motorcycle in the shortest period of time available. In terms of skills then do you have the personality to deal with frustrations, problems and delays along the build process. Even the most experienced motorcycle kit builders find themselves in difficult situations. If you expect your first build to go smoothly with no hitches along the way then perhaps this isn't the project for you. If you are up for a challenge and believe you will complete the project, come what may, then this is probably the right time for you.

Wouldn't it be easier to go buy an "off the shelf" Motorcycle?

In many minds "off the shelf" motorcycles just don't cut it, who wants to be seen driving the same motorcycle as someone else, after all? With a motorcycle kit you can create something truly unique, a motorcycle that matches your personality and means you will always stand out from the crowd.

Enjoy riding that Dream Machine of yours!

To build your dream using one of our Motorcycle Kits call us now on 1-580-224-2888 or visit us at http://www.southern-mc.com/bike-kits.html

Planning a Motorcycle Road Trip

By Jesse T.

As summer draws near, the call of the open road beckons you to seek out new adventures. Here are a few tips to help you plan for your next motorcycle road trip.

Packing for a motorcycle trip takes a little more thought than packing for a trip in the car. You have limited storage space and plenty of items that you might need along the way. The key is to pack as compact and lightweight as possible. If you're not sure you'll need an item, remember that you can always pick up an extra sweatshirt or other item along the way.

Instead of packing bulky clothing for cold weather, pack layers. The warmer it gets, the more layers you can shed, and if the weather turns colder, you can always pile on more layers. Remember to pack your rain gear and a safety and repair kit for emergencies on the road. If you plan to pick up a few souvenirs along the way, leave enough extra storage room for those as well. Don't forget to pack a travel motorcycle cover to protect your bike on the road. A cover not only shields your bike from the elements but it also keeps it out of sight from vandals and thieves. Secure a lock through the grommets for extra protection.

When you fill your saddlebags, try to balance out the weight on each side as much as possible. Pack heavier items in the bottom for a stable base, and leave the lighter items for on top. Engine guard chaps serve a double purpose by keeping your feet warm and dry and providing extra storage space for maps, sunglasses, a water bottle, cell phone, flashlight, or other small items. Engine guard chaps, or soft lower covers, keep your feet from getting soaked in the rain or chilled in cold weather.

Perform a thorough maintenance check on your bike to make sure your trip goes as smoothly as possible. Follow the T-CLOCS method compiled by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation:

Tires and Wheels: Check for proper inflation and make sure you have enough tread left for the miles you plan to cover.

Controls: Inspect the throttle, cables, hoses, and levers.

Lights: Check the headlights, tail lights, turn signals, and brake lights.

Oil: Check fluid levels and top off or change as needed.

Chassis: Make sure your frame, suspension, belts, and fasteners are working properly.

Stands: Make sure your center and side stands are able to support the weight of your motorcycle.

As a safety measure, let someone know your travel plans and when you plan to come home from your motorcycle trip. This will help you ensure that your motorcycle is in good condition. When your motorcycle is in top shape, you will less likely encounter an accident on the road.
Aside from wearing gears like leather motorcycle chaps, jackets, and helmets, checking your motorcycle before you leave can save your life. You have to monitor various parts every time. Keep in mind that if you fail to see that your brakes are loose or not working, you can end up crashing into another automobile or on the railings at the side of the road.

Knowing the how to check the various parts will make each of your trip safer. Here is a helpful guide to checking your motorcycle:

1. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation developed an acronym that you can use as a checklist when checking your motorcycle. This is the T-CLOCS. This stands for the tires, controls, lights, oils, chassis, and stands. The acronym is very useful. This will help you avoid missing anything when you are checking your motorcycle. You also have to remember that the T-CLOCS have sub parts that you need to look into as well.
2. The first on the list is tires. When checking the tires, make sure that it has the right level of air pressure. See to it that it is well inflated but not over the required rate. The tires are important because they are the objects that transport the entire machine. If the air is not the right amount, you will surely have difficulty balancing the bike.

3. The next items that you have to check are the controls. Most of the controls are on the handle. See to it that that the throttle, front brake, clutch, and the rest are working properly. You have to remember that there are also controls on the side of the motorcycle. Check those as well.

4. The next thing you have to check is the lights and other electrically controlled equipments in your motorcycle. All the lights should turn on when needed. You also have to see to it that the signals work when you use them. Try sounding the horn too. This is a very important device. It is the only way you can get the attention of the drivers and pedestrians who are not paying attention on the road.

5. Check the oil container and the rest of the fuel you need for the trip. You can check the gas by dipping the stick into the gas tank. Pour more gas if needed.

6. Check the frame or chassis of your bike as well. Include the other visible parts like the chain or belt.
7. Check the stands of your motorcycle too. You would not want your bike to lie on the ground because the kickstand is not working.

Before you wear your leather motorcycle chaps and the rest of your gears, check your bike properly first. This will ensure a smoother trip.
For more tips and information about leather motorcycle chaps, please check out http://www.outbackleather.com/motorcycle-chaps.

Motorcycle Gloves

By Peter Gitundu

Our hands come into contact with many harmful objects and substances that pose a threat to the safety of these vital body organs. For this reason, it is important that we take all the important measures we can to see to it that we protect them from such conditions. One of the major steps that we can take is to ensure that we wear some protective clothing that covers the palms and the fingers, commonly known as gloves.

These garments come in many forms and they are for different uses. There are what are known as the motorcycle gloves, whose purpose is to provide the hands with a tight grip of the bike's controls so that one is able to negotiate corners and maneuver even on rough terrain.

The best motorcycle mitts are those made of leather. Leather is durable as well as warm especially during winter. People who enjoy motorcycle riding during winter will find the heated mitts very useful.during rainy seasons. They are made from a plastic material, but one bad thing about them is that they tend to get slippery in such situations. There are also those that can be used Moreover, they come as a safety accessory that protect a motorcyclist during accidents.

If you need to invest in these gloves, remember that there is a wide variety to choose from. There are those which are fingerless, medium weight, winter and summer ones. The only way to really be right about what you actually need is to check it all out in the Internet and see what is being offered, both online and offline. And lots of folks want to buy a motorcycle jacket that looks cool and fashionable. However, very few know how to actually buy such a jacket.

If you want to buy a good looking and stylish jacket, there are some points that you should keep in mind.

The first thing that you should consider is the color of the jacket. Now, men's' motorcycle jacket come in a few colors while a lot more choice is available as far as woman's motorcycle jacket are concerned.

You must choose a color that looks good on you. This is the fundamental requirement of choosing a stylish jacket. You must always keep in mind that style is or more a product of your mind rather than the jacket.

If you feel that you are wearing a good looking and stylish jacket, the chances are very high that you are actually wearing such a jacket.

On the other hand, if you feel that your men's motorcycle jacket or ladies motorcycle jacket is not looking good, then the price of the jacket notwithstanding, it must be a very ordinary looking jacket.

Hence, always choose a motorcycle jacket that you like. If you are comfortable with the color of your motorcycle jacket, it will show in the way you carry yourself in the jacket.

Hence, no matter what the fashion magazines say, always choose the color of your motorcycle jacket depending upon your likes and dislikes. Never choose a particular color merely because you were told that it is a stylish color.

What is important is whether the color looks stylish on you or not.

Normally, the most popular colors for the men's motorcycle jackets are black, gray, brown, red and bottle green. As far as the women's motorcycle jackets are concerned, a lot more choices are available.

The women's motorcycle jacket does not suffer from the same stereotypes as the men's jackets suffer. It is expected that a men's jacket will make the wearer macho and masculine.

This is one reason why owners of men's motorcycle jacket are hesitant to innovate and experiment with new colors. However, exceptions do exist. If you feel that a particular jacket will look good on you, go ahead and buy it.

If you want maximum choices in terms of colors, it is imperative that you shop for your motorcycle jacket over the internet. Visiting many stores and searching for the perfect motorcycle jacket can take a lot of time. However, if you conduct this exercise over the internet, you can visit multiple stores and check out many jackets in a very short of time.

You can always communicate with the seller and inform him of your requirements of a particular color. There are many sellers on the internet who are ready to walk that extra mile to satisfy you.

The onus is upon you to identify such sellers. You may be required to pay a premium but that is a small price to pay for a jacket that you want.

For more info, visit: Rocky Top Leather and see what fine goods they have there like a nice motorcycle jacket

For more Motorcycle Resources see www.bestguidetomotorcycles.com.

Motorcycle Maintenance - A Basic Guide

by James Hunaban

Here we have a few things you should check on your motorcycle on a regular basis. I assume you have a handbook with the specs for your bike, if not, go get one. You may be able to find some data for your particular motorcycle on the net. You can also pick up workshop manuals for various models on eBay in PDF or CD form for little money.

Whereas with a four wheeled vehicle you may get away with being lax with things like tire pressures etc, this is not the case with a motorcycle. You should not risk compromising the safety and stability of your motorcycle, for the sake of a bit of routine maintenance.

Pre-ride checks

Tires – check condition and for foreign objects in the tread.

Tire pressures – it is vitally important to keep your motorcycles tire pressures either on spec or very close to it.

Oil level – always check with the bike on level ground.

Coolant level – only if your bike’s liquid cooled, obviously.

Chain – check the tension and make sure it’s well lubed.

Brakes – check they work and that they feel good.

Lights – check all your lights, especially the brake light, you don’t want to get rear ended, do you?

Visual inspection – self explanatory.

All ok – hit the road.

Periodical checks

Check battery – see that the connections are tight; I dropped a bike once because of a loose battery connection, strange but true. Also check the electrolyte level on some batteries, a lot of newer batteries are gel filled, sealed for life types, so no need with these.

Carb balance – if your bike is multi carbed get yourself a Morgan carbtune or similar. It can be a little tricky the first time you balance them, but when you’ve done it once, the second time will be easy.

Ignition timing – only necessary on some bikes, most newer models have electronic ignition which does not need touching, normally.

Valve clearances – unless you’re a good home mechanic, take it to a dealer.

Wheel bearings – grab each wheel with it off the ground and see if there is any sideways play. There should be none or maybe a trace at most.

Steering head bearings – with the front end off the ground, grab the forks and push and pull. There should be no play.

Swinging arm bearings – with the back wheel off the ground, check for any sideways movement in the swingarm, there should be none.

Brakes – check fluid levels, brake hoses for deterioration, and pads/shoes for thickness.

Cables and levers – should operate smoothly. Get some grease on lever/pedal pivot points, and get some lube down the cables, if you can. A cable oiler is a handy tool.

Nut and bolts – go all round the motorcycle with your spanners and check that all nuts/ bolts/screws are nice and tight.

Well, that’s about it for some basic maintenance, obviously, unless you’re a good home mechanic, any bigger jobs will have to go to a dealer. The problem can be finding a good one with skilled mechanics you can trust. I manage to keep my Yamaha Fazer 1000 running sweet just using the steps listed above.
